FREEBORN WILLIAMS GRAVESTONE RESTORATION

The Clifton Burial Ground at 17 King Street in Newport, Rhode Island was established in 1670. Many well-known Rhode Islanders are buried there, including Roger Williams' daughter, Freeborn Williams Clarke (circa 1634 - 1710) and her daughter, Mary Clarke Cranston (circa 1663 - 1710), who was the wife of Gov. Samuel Cranston. Their stone is in serious need of repair and the cemetery commission is looking for donations to help with the restoration, estimated at $3,000. If you would like to help with this important restoration project, please send your check, made out to "Roger Williams Family Association” and noting the cemetery project, to our treasurer, Frank Stevenson, 142 George Allen Road, Chepachet, RI 02814.
